Tooth- Colored Fillings (Composites)
Strong synthetic resins are bonded to the teeth to fill small cavities and fix chips. Tooth-colored fillings, also known as composites, are another alternative to silver fillings. They are advantageous because they restore teeth to their original, natural appearance.
Porcelain veneers correct a vast array of aesthetic shortcomings. Veneers are much like the facing on a fine cabinet or a fingernail applied by a manicurist. They are thin shells of porcelain applied to the outside of a tooth to correct the size, shape, color or alignment. They are strong, durable and offer the most aesthetic solution to many cosmetic problems. Often, treatment is completed in 2 or 3 visits. Some refer to veneers as “instant orthodontics,” because the effect is so dramatic. At your initial exam– we will discover your concerns, determine if you’re a candidate for porcelain veneers and design a solution that’s best for you.
Inlays and Onlays
It is now possible to use tooth-colored materials to restore teeth instead of silver fillings that were once used. These newer composite and porcelain materials are similar to natural tooth enamel, are wear resistant and restore teeth to their original appearance. Porcelain Inlays and Onlays not only bond to the tooth structure, strengthening the teeth and making them more resistant to fracture, but also cosmetically blend into the existing tooth enamel. Usually treatment is more conservative than a silver filling because less tooth structure needs to be removed.
Crowns and Bridges
A crown (or cap) is recommended after a root canal or when a tooth has suffered substantial decay or trauma. The tooth is prepared and a gold, silver or tooth- colored crown is placed over the damaged tooth.
A bridge literally bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth or teeth between to fill the missing space.
A remarkable advancement in dental science, dental implants are permanent restorations anchored in the jaw, used to replace missing teeth. They can replace a single missing tooth or fully restore a segment where multiple teeth are missing. Dental implants are an attractive alternative to more traditional removable appliances. They provide greater stability, security and give the patient the natural feeling of their own teeth.
Dental implants can now also be used to anchor or support dentures. The implants are placed with a special mechanism that allows the denture to firmly attach to it, giving the denture wearer more confidence and ease when talking and chewing foods.
If you and Dr. Englund decide you would be a good candidate for Dental Implants, we will refer you to our experienced Dental Implant Specialist to have the implant placed. After it is healed, Dr. Englund will create and place the final restoration.
Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment is needed either because a tooth has endured trauma or decay has damaged the nerve of the tooth. Root Canal Treatment is a great alternative to having a tooth extracted. The decay, infection (if any) and nerve are removed and replaced with a rubber material designed to seal the inside of the tooth. A filling is placed on your tooth and often, a crown is then recommended to fully protect your tooth from any further damage.
An extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are often performed when breakage or decay is too substantial to be able to effectively restore the tooth. Extractions are also routinely performed on impacted or problematic wisdom teeth and on other permanent teeth to further aid orthodontic treatment.
Many of our patients voice their concerns about darkening teeth; perhaps because of aging, smoking, coffee or medications. Whitening teeth is a straightforward procedure to brighten your smile. It’s relatively inexpensive, easy and safe. Custom mouth trays, similar to mouth guards, are created so you can apply the whitening solution and complete treatment at home! Optimum results are usually seen in 10 to 14 days. You’ll notice a difference in no time – and so will everyone else.
Dentures, also known as false teeth, are removable devices used to replace missing teeth. There are 2 types of dentures; Full and partial. A full denture is held on by suctioning to the gums and replaces an entire mouth of missing teeth. A partial denture also replaces missing teeth but is held in place by clasps that attach to remaining teeth. Learn about alternatives by exploring Dental Implants.
